Power-Opdracht Rik Rutten
For power-assignment I was tasked with making a gamifying solution to littering at the Lowlands festival.
After I had done my research I started on concepts.
My first was a villain representing climate change and pollution, which the patrons could defeat by filling up a cannon-shaped trash bin.
The second was an ap that tracked how many pieces of trash were found, and if too many were found songs and events would be cancelled.
The third were trash bins which were distributed throughout the entire festival, which gave the patrons tokens to buy things with whenever they threw something away.
I eventually chose the first idea, because of the togetherness of the activity, and the playing into intrinsic desire rather than a cut and dry reward system, so I started quickly scribbling different Ideas I had for villains.
I then made some silhouettes from which my opdrachtgever could choose, he then eventually chose the top right.
I also made a simple infographic on the workings of the trashcan itself.
I then made a final design for the villain, making sure to include relevant and topical references in the design that played into my demographic.
Originally I meant for the colours to match the festival, but the festival uses all kinds of colours, so that idea fell through.
I also asked one of my classmates to make a scale model of the actual trashcan, as part of the project for which I made an infographic as instructions.
The final design (With the repeating silhouette motif present in the rest of the festival's style.) with a mockup of what it would look like at the festival.
Reflection:

By far this is one of the smoothest processes I have ever had during a project on this school. What really helped is Bang’s initial whipcrack, when he told me he was falling behind. Even him getting slightly frustrated with me helped me understand the direness of the situation I was in, he was also quick reassure me that I could still do it but that my continued inaction and idleness had caused me to lack behind. It was a final hurdle to get me to take onenote and all other secretarial business more seriously. This kind of clarity and urgency has helped me in being more effective creatively too, doing more efficient and targeted research as well as having more fun designing. I have ample faith that this project will be accepted into examen portfolio, and am excited to present it!

Evaluation:

Bang worked really well with me on this project, he came up to me randomly to check on my work which I appreciated the most, and he was almost always available to talk and discuss. Meetings were short and to the point and no time was wated dillydallying around issues. I was lacklustre when it came to putting myself on the board when I needed to talk, so next period I will be sure to be vigilant in that as well.
Conclusion:

I'm satisfied with the work I did in this project, I am impressed with the diligence I was able to muster and hope I can do the same next period. I am excited to present all my ideas and get feedback on what I have made so I can perform better next period!
